Chen Wen Hsi Retrospective 1982 - National Museum Art Gallery, Singapore   RM200

Before Chen Wen Hsi left his native China in 1947, he had been identified by at least one English art magazine as one of the ten most important contemporary artists of the country. He settled in Singapore where he developed his art, often a fusion of Chinese and Western styles, and taught art in the city. This is a catalogue of a retrospective exhibition of his work held in 1982. He died less than a decade later in Singapore. Unpaginated. A weighty catalogue of the jewellery collection held at the Barbier - Muller Museum  Geneva in 1985. The subject is gold jewellery, mainly from the indigenous peoples of the area. There is an extensive introduction by Rogers, a senior anthropologist with experience of working with tribal people in the archipelago and a wealth of black and white and colour photographs. 369 pages. Rhapsodies Beyond the Silk Road – Calvin Chua  RM150

An exhibition catalogue  accompanying an exhibition of Chua's work inspired by a visit to Central Asia and China. The exhibition consisted of ten large paintings and a collection of sketches. The work represents a more dynamic abstract style compared to his previous work. 42 pages with colour plates of the works exhibited, an interview with the artist and some colour photos of his journey. The author is the daughter of a Punjabi father and Chinese mother, who despite family opposition, married in 1966. The book really tells us how they got to that point and what happened afterwards as Chauly reveals the results of burrowings through generations of family history with which many other children of the Chinese and Indian Diaspora can identify. It's also part of the people's history of Malaysia, i.e. how cultures endured and changed and then contributed  to a new Malaysian culture. Fortunately the author's ancestors left behind lots of written and photographic material to enable her to bring this fascinating story to us. Borneo

Among Primitive Peoples in Borneo - Ivor H. N Evans   RM400

Evans was a pioneering ethnographer and archaeologist in North Borneo and on the Malay Peninsula. This book is an enthusiastic account of his experiences and findings in the place he was happiest, present day Sabah. The book is not full of dry academic detail as Evans was an enchanting writer. 313 pages with 21 black and white plates and a pull out map. Very Good Hardback. First Edition

As one might expect from an organisation representing the busy mems of Malaya in the late 1940s, this is a no nonsense cookery book packed with lots of tips and tried recipes for the tropics. The book is in English except for a chapter on Methods of Cooking where there is a Malay translation as well. A useful collection of extracts of mainly visitors to the peninsual and their impressions. So Hugh Clifford, Isabella Bird, Katherine Sim, Victor Purcell and many other similar movers and hangers on in the British set up are much in evidence. However longer term residents such as  Munshi Abdullah, Mat Syed, Chin Kee Onn and others appear too. Probably one of the best starting points for exploring this literature more widely.
