This is probably the first significant biography of Francis Light, the founder of British interests in Penang and of his son, William, who went on to set up a British colony in Adelaide, Australia. Nineteenth Century Borneo: A Study in Diplomatic Rivalry - Graham Irwin   RM150



The Dutch were the first European colonists in Borneo, but had to withdraw for about ten years because of the Napoleonic Wars at the beginning of the century. The Expedition to Borneo of HMS Dido for the Suppression of Piracy - Henry Keppel  RM170



Keppel, who later rose to become admiral of the British fleet, gained his first captaincy while on service in Southeast Asia. Coincidentally he took command of H.M.S. Dido just at the time James Brooke was establishing himself in Sarawak. This book is Keppel's accounts of his visits to the state before and after Brooke was established as rajah there. Most of the book is not an account of naval actions, but rather a description of the peoples and country he found there. The White Rajahs - Steven Runciman  RM100


Runciman, best known for his majestic history of the Crusades, embarked on the more recent history of the Brooke family with some trepidation since many of the characters of the story were either recently dead or still living. Malaysia & Singapore - Environment, Nature & Wildlife


Hugh Low is probably best known as a colonial administrator, both in Borneo and on the Malay Peninsula. However what took him to Borneo in the first place was botany.
