In this first authoritative biography of one of the pillars of Overseas Chinese society in South east Asia in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Ilsa Sharp clears up much of the folklore that has built up around the man. Born in Penang, he took over his late father's business interests at the age of 21 and expanded them to become one of the richest men in the region within ten years. This was mainly due to his versatility as he switched businesses and centres of operation between Hong Kong, Malaya & Singapore. New Laminated Boards 217 pages. Very Good Copy RM90
It is unlikely that Malaya and Singapore would have experienced the same rapid commercial development from the late 18th century onwards had it not been for Chinese businessmen, like the subject of this book. Born in Malacca at the beginning of the 19th century as a third generation Chinese in the city, he soon moved to Singapore within years of its establishment as a trading post. It was not long before he became a force to be reckoned with in the both Singapore and Malacca, running successful businesses, mediating in clan rivalries, opening Singapore's first Chinese school and making his mark generally as a benefactor to the wider community. New Hardback. First Edition. 147 pages with several, mainly colour illustrations, an extensive Tan family tree and a bibliography.

Malaysia & Singapore - Chinese Community & Culture
Malaysia is unique in countries with a Chinese minority in Southeast Asia in having a Chinese medium schooling system that is supported by the state. New Paperback. First Edition. 121 pages with a list of references
Malaysia & Singapore - Cooking & Food
Well before the word 'fusion' came to be associated with cooking the Peranakan community, a mix between early Chinese settlers and their hosts, had been creating their own fusion cuisine from Chinese and indigenous ingredients. The Nonyas, as Peranakan females are often called, had plenty of time in the kitchen to create the antithesis of fast food, complicated and delicious recipes. In this book Tan chooses to show the simpler side of such cooking, the everyday meals for a family at home, rather than the festive feasts for which the community has become famous. New Hardback. First Edition. 240 pages, of which 40 are devoted to ingredients and tools including many colour photographs and an index.
While Nyonya cooking books come thick and fast this one is a little more unusual in that it's the result of two years research by the State Chinese (Penang) Association, a 'guardian of the Penang Peranakan (Straits Chinese) Culture' and the publishers to capture many familiar and many almost forgotten recipes of this distinctive creole cuisine. A Debbie Teoh was even used as the 'food tester' in the hope of ensuring the recipes' authenticity. New Paperback 248 pages including colour illustrations of the recipes and much else besides. There is also an index of the recipes. Chapters include - A Brief History, Festivals & Festive Food, Nyonyaware, The Nyonya Kitchen, Cooking Methods, Ingredients, Sambal + Sauces, Pickles, Snacks & Starters, Kerabu, Vegetables, Soups + Stews, Poultry, Pork, Seafood, Rice + Noodles, Kuih, Sweet Broths + Drinks, New Year Cookies + Sweets and Confinement Food.
Malaysia & Singapore - The 'Emergency'
This is the author's account of his experience of serving with The Royal Marine Commandos in Malay during the "Emergency.' The title refers to the commandos' green beret and the guerillas' red star on their caps. The book was written to demonstrate to the folks back home the trying conditions in which their countrymen found themselves when this type of jungle warfare was still quite novel. The author also details Malayans' contribution to the war effort, but he does not view the Chinese community, 'sitting on the fence,' in a favourable light. Very Good Hardback in a Good Dust Jacket. First Edition 221 pages with some black and white photographs.

Lovers and Strangers Revisited - Robert Raymer RM80
This is the second revision of a group of short stories written by Raymer that were originally published in 1993, revised again for another publisher in 2005 and now we have the third version with yet another publisher. That publishing history indicates the popularity of the stories written by an expatriate who's been in Malaysia for more than 20 years, but, unlike most similar expatriates, he's lived within ordinary Malaysian communities most of the time. This gives his stories a special quality. Their slant is not exactly the slant that most Malaysians writing in English would give, but the stories don't have the slant of a disconnected outsider as well. Raymer is also a professional teacher of creative writing and several of these stories are part of Malaysian universities' curricula today. Near Fine Paperback. Second Edition. Signed by the Author 160 pages
A collection of short stories by Malaysia's first female novelist in English. Some have been previously published, but most of the 12 stories have not. Near Fine Paperback. First Edition. 151 pages.

The book does not so much look at political and rights issues in relation to the media, but rather how traditional power relationships have been transformed. New Hardback. First Edition. 234 pages with some black and white plates, figures, tables and an index.
Malaysia & Singapore - Language & Linguistics
One of the great joys of spoken language is the clues the language gives to the speakers' way of life. Baba Malay, the language spoken by by descendants of early Chinese immigrants to the Malay peninsula who intermarried with Malays, is no exception. Both the immigrants and the Malays they met hadn't had the benefit of a classroom, so 'bazaar' Malay and colloquial Hokkien went into the melting pot to produce this lively and gutsy language. The author helps us through our occasional bits of puzzlement in this Baba Malay - English dictionary by giving us the original Hokkien or Malay derivations of words that baffle. 223 pages ending with a glossary of cherki, the Straits Chinese card game, and illustrations of the cards. New Paperback First Edition

Malaysia & Singapore - Malay Community & Culture
This is a reprint of the 1929 revised and enlarged edition of Gimlette's classic work, which was based on his 18 years' experience as a doctor in the Malay States. Despite the possibly negative connotations of the title, the book was written for the benefit of the medical profession as an encouragement to carry out research into the efficacy, if any, of the potions and practices of traditional bomoh/pawang, medicine men. Very Good Paperback. Reprint Originally published in 1915 301 pages with appendices on charms used, poisonous plants and Kelantan poisons and an index.
This classic work examines the relationship between community leaders, usually sultans and administrators, in traditional Malay society and seeks to determine the extent to which it has been replicated or changed in post independence Malaysia. Myths and the Malay Ruling Class - Sharifah Maznah Syed Omar RM120
This is sharp critique of the pernicious effects of Malay myths on Malay society. As with much of mythology the world over, legends are written with a view to keeping the general populace firmly tethered to the whims of the ruling class. While in many countries such folklore is now seen as a charming, but inaccurate, account of ancient history, the author argues that in modern Malaysia it is still used to befuddle many into giving deference to those who least deserve it. Very Good. Paperback. First Edition. 121 pages.
