This is the autobiography of a scholar and resident of Malacca in the 19th century. This is the autobiography of Janet Lim, who was born in China to parents who abandoned her, sold as a domestic servant to a family in Singapore, from which she managed to escape and train as a nurse as the Second World War was approaching. On escaping from Singapore she fell into Japanese hands and remained their prisoner until the end of the war. This is reputed to be the first book written in English by a woman from Singapore. This is the record of a fascinating project by the museum whereby over several years they had invited traditional boat builders to construct boats on the museum premises so as to be able to better understand the construction process of Viking longboats. A brief history of a building which started out as a Prisoner of War camp used by the Japanese and ended up as a Teachers' Training College. The Sarawak United Peoples' Party (SUPP) was the first political party formed in the state in response to the 1959 constitution which failed to grant the self-governance expected by most citizens. This book traces the party's history from then until the beginning of this century. 515 pages.
Wherever the British set foot they usually managed to establish a club and Kuching was no exception. Templer, often credited with turning the tide against against the Communist insurgents in the 'Emergency.' was a complex man. In this book the author, with the co-opertaion of, but not directed by his widow seeks to piece together his life. Although he had many other accomplishments, both before and after his service in Malaya, he died largely unnoticed by politicians, but mourned by his fellow soldiers. This book mainly covers the period when Laurence Guillemard was Governor of the Straits Settlements and High Commissioner for the Federated Malay States. He was the the first such official to arrive without previous colonial experience and came with a mission to decentralise government in the hope of encouraging greater participation by the sultans, much to the chagrin of British and Chinese commercial interests. This work was originally presented as a thesis by the author while attending the University of Geneva. Although through much of this period Malaya, and later Malaysia, looked inwards to deal with the security threat of the Communist insurgency, this focus also governed its relations with its neighbours, particularly Thailand and came to frame the Government's generally ant-Communist stance in the area, for example its support for Saigon in the war in Vietnam. Lim Beng Hai was part of the Sarawakian team that joined up with mainly Australian troops in Operation Semut in Sarawak at the end of World War II. The purpose of the operation was to drop Allied forces behind Japanese lines to train and lead local resistance. In this book Lim describes his role in the operation as well as explaining the manners and customs of indigenous tribes who joined him in the operation.
