Malaysia & Singapore - Anthropology & Sociology


In this book, Cole, an anthropologist from the University of Chicago, sets himself a large task, i.e. to describe the history, manners and customs of the Phillipines, present day Indonesia and Malaysia and some of the Pacific Islands. He confines himself to people of Malayic or pre-Malayic origin. Blythe, Secretary for Chinese Affairs in Malaya in the immediate post war period, produces one of the most comprehensive accounts of secret societies that were an integral part of Chinese society both on the mainland and amongst Chinese overseas. Malaysia & Singapore - Cinema, Dance, Drama & Music


A forgotten, but still relevant, slice of Singapore's history. In 1978 a Hollywood team of actors and behind the camera people filmed the adaptation of Paul Theroux's well known novel, Saint Jack, on the streets and in the brothels of Singapore without permission from the authorities. The feat was achieved with the help of a group of Singapore residents, whom the author interviewed, together with the visitors, to produce this account of the escapade. Malaya in the 1950s was the first post-WWII testing ground where colonial powers had to face up to guerilla warfare from local insurgents with some popular support. Purcell was a frequent visitor to the country and although probably accurately described by the British Communist, Palme Dutt, as an 'apologist for imperialism,' is critical in this book of British attempts to crush the uprising by force without paying sufficient attention to encouraging democratic development elsewhere. This guide to a nature park, maintained by the Malaysian Nature Society, not only contains a map for visitors, but descriptions and photographs of the main flora and fauna species that have the park as their home. The park is best known for its extensive mangrove swamps and over 100 species of birds. There is a bird check list as well as an index to the main fauna to be found there. 105 pages.

In his heyday, Maugham travelled the world to collect material for the more than one hundred short stories he wrote in his lifetime. At the time of constitutional discussions in Malaya in 1947 a popular front, Putera-The All-Malaya Council of Joint Action, put forward their own proposals which would have increased the chances of the country's subsequent political history not being blighted by racism and elite politics. The proposals were rejected by the British colonial administration. On the 70th anniversary of the proposals, they are republished here together with essays on their significance and other documents. While most historical writing in English on Malay Sultans concentrates on their interactions with British colonialism, Gullick here takes a step backwards to look at how they functioned before the British reduced their role. This is the autobiography of a scholar and  resident of Malacca in the 19th century. He was an associate of several East India Company officers, including Raffles, and so provides a rare account, from a local viewpoint, of the time when the British were rapidly extending their influence on the Peninsula. This translation includes the main work, Volume I, and the smaller Volume II, but is only in English with an extensive introduction, many useful notes and a commentary. Malaysia & Singapore - Magic & Popular Religion


On this subject, Shaw is best known for his work, Aspects of Malaysian Magic, which was published two years after this monograph. Presumably most of the information here was also in the later book.  He covers various aspects of magic from various cultures, but has most information on Malay practices. One might think that Malays, from what is now Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore, only migrated to Australia in modern times. However due to Malays often being seafarers from a land mass near Australia, groups have been arriving in Australia, Christmas Island and the Cocos (Keeling) Islands for some time. Orang Asli/Indigenous Peoples


The author's account of fifteen days spent with the Temiar aboriginal people in the Malayan jungle in the 1950s. Motivated by little more than curiosity, he finds himself caught up in rituals and other events that made a profound impression on him. Good Hardback in a Good Dust Jacket. Reprint. Originally published in 1953. 182 pages with two maps and several black and white plates.







At the time of this reprint, this account of the Negrito aborigines of Malaysia remained the only description of the people made by someone who had actually lived with them extensively, although the first edition had been published nearly half a century earlier. Schebesta, a theologian, gives an account of the Negrito religion that has seldom been bettered and was the first person to identify distinctly separate groups within the wide 'Negrito' definition that had been employed earlier. Singapore has developed into a successful city state in Southeast Asia thanks to a generally accepted public consensus that freedom of expression needs to be limited and a meritocracy with little wealth distribution needs to flourish to protect  a vulnerable and fragile evolving entity. 8th March 2008 marked the day when, for the first time since independence some 50 years before, the ruling Barisan Nasional coalition no longer had a two-thirds majority in parliament. Brunei
