This week's main news for The Penang Bookshelf is the snapping up of a pile of books published by Marshall Cavendish Academic Publishing about a decade ago. Many of them are scarce or just not around any longer. Let's hope you'll find something amongst them that's of interest.

They have yet to reach our shelves, but should do so in the course of this month. In the meantime The Penang Bookshelf is running an offer on them. As usual the eventual selling price is marked in blue while the offer price is marked in red. To take advantage of the offer price all you have to do is contact penangbookshelf@gmail.com to reserve the one or more titles in which you're interested and make payment before the book appears on The Penang Bookshelf website. (A book will not be secured until payment is received.) The books are on their way to The Penang Bookshelf now, so they will probably start appearing on the website in June.

I first came across this book within a year of The Penang Bookshelf being established. I noticed it on a client's bookshelf when she asked me to sell her library. The title was intriguing and the contents event more fascinating. This was the most detialed desciption of what, according to a group of eminent British experts, was happening in Malaya at the beginning of the twentieth century. The book was lavishly illustrated with a startling amount of detail about the country.

I didn't advertise the book immediately because I couldn't find a copy on the internet at the time, so rpicing was going to be difficult. I found this surprising as this wasn't the original book, but a 1970s reprint by the well known Singapore publisher, Graham Brash. However a customer happened to ask me if I had a copy, so I fished it out and invented a price of RM500. He turned on his heel and left. So to spite him, I then put it up on the internet for RM700 and sold it within two weeks.

So I'd made a note that this was an important book to look out for. About a year later I noticed the book again, another reprint, but surprisingly it was three or four times the size of the copy I had sold previously. With a bit of detective work I managed to work out that after Arnold Wright had produced his original work in 1908, he added an abridged version of Twentieth Century Impressions of British Malaya to his later work Twentieth Century Impressions of Siam. It was this abridged version that Graham Brash had reprinted.

When I managed to get hold of this reprint I began to understand what all the fuss was about. I have yet to come across another book written about this country which carries just so much detail. Wright, as editor, had gathered together a remarkable collection recognised authorities and given them what appeared to be free rein to write as much as they wanted about thei own particular topic. At the same time he commissioned and collected a staggering set of photographs. Almost every page has at least one illustartion. I wonder if anyone has written down the story of how the book came to be made. It runs to nearly a thousand pages and, as far as I know, has yet to be equalled. The Penang Bookshelf has since sold copies of this full reprint to customers both inside and outside Malaysia on a regular basis. It's in The Penang Bookshelf's bestseller list for 2013  (PB) at the moment

In the meantime another copy of Graham Brash's reprint came into the hands of The Penang Bookshelf. With the new full reprint on the market, I couldn't even dream of selling this book for the origonal price and so let it go, fairly quickly, for RM150. Yet the original edition of the main work eluded me. I saw one copy in a hopeless condition come up for auction and disappear. One of The Penang Bookshelf's customers bought it, but wasn't that satisfied with it. I was in touch with the owner of another copy of the original edition in this country, but it also seemed to be in a bad state.

And then I found it! A bookseller in a fairly wild and woolly part of England had a copy. After nearly a month of negotiations, sorting out the finances and shipment, I had bought the most expensive book I have ever bought or am likely to buy, a reasonable copy of the first edition of Twentieth Century Impressions of British Malaya.  (PB)

Although The Penang Bookshelf was established mainly to provide books about Malaysia to customers in Malaysia, once we hit the internet in November 2010, we built up an overseas clientele as well. Until now our main website  has been in USD. That just happened to be the easiest package for setting up an online store that we could find. It was linked to our store at Malaysian eBay where the currency is Ringgit. That's been doing well. The Penang Bookshelf is an eBay 'Power Seller' whatever that means. However it's been unsatisfactory because potential customers had to sign up to eBay and often grapple with the complexities of PayPal, eBay's preferred payment mechanism.

In fact, most of The Penang Bookshelf's Malaysia based customers would see an item on our main website and contact us direct to buy the books. All this seemed crazy since our operating currency is and has always been ringgit. A search for a website mechansim that would offer customers a choice of currencies for payment has been long and arduous. We reached a dead end. So it seems that probably the best choice was to set up a mirror site in ringgit. That's how www.pinangtreebooks.com was born. (How the name came about is a long story that's best left to another time.)

So now, at last, The Penang Bookshelf's Malaysia based customers have a website where they will be able to make payments through banks in Malaysia and see the book prices in a currency that's easier to deal with. At the time of writing about half of The Penang Bookshelf's advertised stock is up online and the rest should be there by the end of March.

Malayan Spymaster Event in Penang!

One of The Penang Bookshelf's bestsellers over the last year or so has been Malayan Spymaster by John Hembry. The book was originally written for the author's grandchildren to let them know what his life in Malaya was like, but after his death his family thought others may also be interested in his memoirs. Since the book was published in 2011 by Monsoon Books of Singapore, the book has sold so well that it was reprinted at the end of last year.

Hembry was principally a planter who became caught up in first trying to defend British interests in Malaya firstly against the Japanese and then again after World War II in what came to be known as 'The Malayan Emergency.' As The Penang Bookshelf's review of the book  indicates, Hembry was very much a man of his times, efficient at getting his job done with a colonial mindset in a colonial environment. However, even with the benefit of hindsight his life was eventful and significant, contributing in many ways to Malaysia as it is today.

His son, John Hembry, who features in the book, is visiting Penang at the moment and will be leading a discussion about the events described by the book and obstacles, from the British intelligence services among others, in having the book published. 

The event will be held at The Ferrighi Garden Restaurant on Thursday 14th March from 10am to 12noon. The Penang Bookshelf will be on hand to sell copies of the book at a reduced price of  RM35, when the book is bought on its own, or RM30, when the book is bought with another one of Monsoon's books, which will also be on sale at the event. The Penang Bookshelf will also be selling copies of one of Monsoon's latest books, Amber Road by Boyd Anderson at the normal retail price of RM45

Opus Publications of Kota Kinabalu have just published Pre-War Images of North Borneo by Lim Pitt Kent and Nicholas KM Tan.  

The authors have managed to gather togetherthe entire collection of 148 postcards in a very handsomely produced book that is likely to quickly become a collectors item. The print run has been limited to 100 numbered copies of a gilt edged special edition and a further 400 copies of the normal edition. The book has been sumptuously produced, being thread sewn and printed on imported 250g German paper of the finest quality.

The Penang Bookshelf has already ordered a few of the copies of the normal edition which should be available for dispatch before the end of the month.

The normal edition will be available from The Penang Bookshelf for RM300 post paid within Malaysia and RM350 (AU$109/EUR86/GBP73/US$115) post paid surface mail internationally. Airmail posting will incur an additional charge.
